Marina Internet Service

Many boaters today desire to access the Internet while they are on board. This may include such activities as checking e-mail, downloading charts, checking the weather, or checking on potential restaurants at the destination port. Many accomplish this using a laptop computer with a wireless antenna that can connect to a signal from a Wi-Fi transmitter. The problem comes from finding a Wi-Fi "hotspot" to which the computer can connect, and the ability to do this is often limited to a 3-mile radius from the transmitter.

However, suppose that a boater could access a signal within 10 to 20 miles from its home port marina. This is actually possible using Accurate Electronics' Ethernet Transceivers. Instead of using a Wi-Fi transmitter, the marina owner could transmit an Internet signal using an Ethernet transceiver. Instead of using a Wi-Fi antenna, the boater would plug his laptop computer into his on-board Ethernet transceiver that would pick up the signal from the transmitter. It would be like attaching a laptop to the marina's Internet service with a 20-mile-long Ethernet cable, but without the cable.

Since the range of the wireless antennas embedded in the Ethernet Transceivers is so much greater, this opens up the possibility of additional uses that are not possible or severely limited with Wi-Fi transmissions. For instance, a boater would have access to VOIP (Voice Over Internet Phone) systems, as well as the use of Internet voice and picture communications, such as Skype.

Marina owners would need a high-speed Internet service to connect the first Ethernet Transceiver unit to (called an Access Point). A tower is also needed so that the Ethernet Transceiver would have line-of-sight to the ocean. Individual transceiver units (called Subscriber Units) could be rented to boat owners. Up to 16 Subscriber Units can be wirelessly connected to an Access Point, but since there are up to 12 radio channels available, it is possible to create a network with additional Access Points and up to 192 Subscriber Units.
